Syracuse, NY – The school bus driver involved in a crash Monday with a car in Syracuse’s Salt Springs neighborhood will no longer drive for the Syracuse City School District, the district’s transportation director said this morning.

The driver, Steven Riegelman, 42, of Pennellville, was ticketed by Syracuse police for driving at an imprudent speed, passing a stop sign and failing to yield the right of way after the minibus he was driving crashed into a Kia sedan about 8:15 a.m. at Ball and Milnor avenues.

The impact knocked the bus onto its side and roof-first into a streetside tree, crumpled the front end of the Kia and sent Riegelman, bus monitor Takeya Harper and Kathy Miller, driver of the sedan, to area hospitals. No children were aboard the bus.

“As far as his employer, which is First Student, they’ve got him on administrative leave. I am releasing him from anything to do with the Syracuse City School District, so he will not be driving any routes for the Syracuse City School District,” Transportation Director Patricia A. Bailey said. The district contracts with First Student for school bus services.

First Student has suspended Riegelman pending the outcome of an internal investigation, said Timothy Stokes, a spokeman for the company at its Cincinnati headquarters. Stokes said he did not know whether the suspension was paid or unpaid.
