Syracuse, NY - Mayor Stephanie Miner has named a new water commissioner, city spokeswoman Lindsay McCluskey said today.
Former deputy commissioner Deborah Somers is replacing Mike Ryan, who recently took a job with the Mohawk Valley Water Authority in Utica, McCluskey said. Somers was promoted to deputy water commissioner in January and previously worked as deputy finance commissioner and utilities billing supervisor.
Her salary as commissioner will be $84,443, McCluskey said. That’s a $12,000 raise from her previous salary, according to payroll records. Somers has been a city employee since 1996, records show.
Ryan's salary was $80,000. He had served as commissioner since late 2005 and worked for the city since 1993.
Earlier this year, Common Council voted to remove a requirement that the city water commissioner be an engineer. Somers, who is not an engineer, has led the water department’s billing and financial matters.
