Cap is keeping up to 462,000 gallons a day out of the Gulf.
Even if the flow of crude oil into the Gulf of Mexico was stopped in the next couple of months, it could take well into fall to deal with the damage caused by the oil that's already been spilled, U.S. Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen said Sunday. Since the spill began in April, roughly 23 million to 50 million gallons of oil have leaked into the Gulf, The Associated Press reported.
A cap placed over the busted well last week has siphoned off an increasing amount of oil to be captured in a tanker. The Coast Guard said today the cap is now keeping up to 462,000 gallons of oil a day from leaking.
