Syracuse, NY -- Here's some safety tips for Halloween from the Syracuse police:
- Wear a costume that makes it easy for you to walk, see and be seen.
- Adults should always accompany smaller children. It's best to take them out earlier in the evening.
- Carry a flashlight, or a glow stick. Make sure some reflective material is on costumes.
- Establish ground rules for older children: Stay in a group, have a curfew and stay in agreed-upon neighborhoods, carry a cell phone for emergencies.
- Use sidewalks. Walk facing traffic if no sidewalk is available. Cross at crosswalks, never dart into the road.
- Avoid houses that aren't lit. Outside lights are a sign that trick-or-treaters are welcome.
- Never go inside unless it's a family member or friend.
- Have an adult inspect all treats. Do not eat homemade treats unless you're sure of the source. Throw out anything that appears to have been tampered with.
- Drivers need to be aware of trick-or-treaters. Drive slowly during the peak hours of 5:30 to 7 p.m.
- Have a designated driver if attending an adult Halloween party where alcohol is served.
- Don't drive while wearing a mask. Visibility could be obscured.
