Pamelia, NY — Police have charged a 43-year-old man in the fatal shooting of his friend while deer hunting after dark in a wooded area in northern New York.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department says Terry Hofferberth of Alexandria Bay was charged Tuesday with second-degree manslaughter, hunting after legal hours and using a shotgun during muzzle-loading season.
Detectives say Hofferberth shot 56-year-old Clayton Typhair of Watertown after mistaking him for a deer while they hunted with two other men after 7 p.m. Oct. 18 in the town of Pamelia.
Typhair died at the scene.
Police say Hofferberth told detectives he’s diabetic and was experiencing blurred vision at the time.
Hofferberth was being held in jail on $15,000 bail. It wasn’t immediately clear if he had a lawyer.
