A boil water order was extended today for some 280 residences in the village of Cayuga and a portion of the town of Aurelius.

“The filter plant is still not producing water consistently that meets the turbidity (clarity) standards,’’ the Cayuga County health department said today in a release announcing the boil water order extension.

The order won’t be lifted until the water meets turbidity standards and there is no harmful bacteria in the water,’’ the health department said.

About 200 residents in Cayuga and some 80 customers along state Route 90 in Aurelius have been under order to boil their water since Sept. 25. The order was issued after a water main broke and the village filter plant lost water pressure trying to refill the water holding tank.

The village is working with its engineer to fix the problem, according to the release.

Residents are urged to buy approved bottled water or boil any tap water used for drinking, making ice, brushing their teeth, washing dishes and for food preparation.
