Otisco, NY -- The driver of a drag racer that crashed into a tree in the town of Otisco was taken by helicopter to a Syracuse hospital this morning.
Frederick D. Powers, 61, of 2318 Case Hill Road, was driving the car north on Case Hill Road and crashed the vehicle about 11 a.m. in front of his home. Powers was conscious and is not believed to have life-threatening injuries, Onondaga County Sheriff's deputies said.
The car that crashed is a 1966 Chevy Super Sport that has been modified with high-performance automotive equipment for drag racing, deputies said.
The driver was testing the car on Case Hill Road, driving north from Cook Road when he lost control of the car, deputies said. The car smashed a shed in front of of his Case Hill Road home and struck a tree.
The car suffered extensive damage. Deputies said the drag racer was not legal for use on streets and the driver is facing tickets.
