Update:
Town of Oswego, NY – A driver fleeing a traffic stop in Fulton hit police vehicles, narrowly avoided a striking an officer and displayed a knife to other police before being hit with a Taser and apprehended outside his town of Oswego home, police said.
The incident began about 6:30 p.m. Thursday when Fulton police tried to stop the male suspect for speeding at state Route 481 and Shaw Street, Fulton, said Oswego Police Capt. Tory DeCaire, speaking for his department, Fulton and the Oswego County Sheriff’s office.
The man, who was not identified, sped north on state Route 481, reaching speeds up to 90 mph with Fulton police and sheriff’s deputies in pursuit, DeCaire said.
The vehicle turned into the parking lot at the Tim Horton’s coffee shop, 200 E. First St., Oswego. When police tried to block it from leaving, DeCaire said, the driver drove toward at least one Oswego officer who was trying to approach the vehicle on foot. The officer avoided being hit, but the car struck an Oswego police car and a sheriff’s cruiser before exiting the lot, he said.
The driver fled west on Utica Street, hit a tree and caused damage at West Utica and West Fifth streets, and continued West Fifth to state Route 104, striking several other sheriff’s cars along the way, DeCaire said.
The vehicle headed west on Route 104 and stopped about a half-mile west of the city limits at what investigators later discovered was the driver’s home, DeCaire said. The man displayed a folding knife as deputies and Fulton police confronted him. Officers used a Taser to take the man into custody and brought him to Oswego Hospital for evaluation, DeCaire said.
Sheriff Reuel Todd said the man’s identity is being withheld because of state health privacy regulations. He may be identified later if charges are filed, Todd said.
Three sheriff’s cars and one Oswego city police car were damaged during the incident. No serious injuries were reported, DeCaire said.
The investigation continues and police are asking witnesses to come forward, particularly the driver of a dark sport-utility vehicle that may have been in the Tim Horton’s parking lot. Those with information should call Oswego City Police at 342-8120.
