Mahatma Gandhi, Irish Republican Army prisoners and American suffragists viewed the hunger strike as the ultimate form of nonviolent protest against oppression. On Thursday, local Tea Party activist Tom Cavanaugh began fasting in order to draw attention to a slightly less weighty issue of political justice: Fox News host Sean Hannity's failure to interview GOP gubernatorial hopeful Carl Paladino on his syndicated radio show.
The 58-year-old East Berne resident took up his position outside Hannity's WABC studio at 2 Penn Plaza in midtown Manhattan on Thursday morning. He has a chair, a Paladino sign and a poster that reads "Sean Hannity Unfair to New York Republicans." Despite the presence of a Nathan's Famous across the street, Cavanaugh insists he'll stay there and consume nothing but water, orange juice and vitamins until "whatever it takes."
