Village of Mexico, NY – A convenience store clerk who refused to hand over cigarettes unless a would-be robber took off his mask thwarted the attempted theft early Sunday, the Oswego County Sheriff’s Office said.
Deputies said Rashad D. Wilson, 18, of 76 Smyles Drive, Rochester, was charged about 1:15 a.m. Sunday with first-degree attempted robbery, a felony, and fifth-degree conspiracy, a misdemeanor, following a subsequent traffic stop.
According to deputies, Wilson entered the Kwik Fill convenience store on Main Street in the village of Mexico wearing a camouflage ski mask and a black hooded sweatshirt and demanded that the clerk give him cigarettes.
When the clerk, whom deputies did not identify, told Wilson he must first remove his mask, Wilson raised his shirt to display a handgun. When the clerk still refused to hand over cigarettes, Wilson left the store, deputies said. Deputies later stopped the car he was driving at Pople Ridge and Paradise roads, Mexico.
Wilson was arraigned in Palermo town court and ordered held at the Oswego County Correctional Facility on bail of $15,000 cash or $30,000 bond pending an appearance Tuesday in Mexico town court, deputies said.
A 16-year-old girl and a 17-year-old boy, both residents of New Haven, later were charged with fifth-degree conspiracy in relation to the incident. Both were issued tickets ordering them to appear Sept. 14 in Mexico town court, deputies said. Officials did not identify the alleged conspirators because of their ages.
