Syracuse, N.Y. -- Eastern Equine Encephalitis virus has been discovered in mosquitoes in the town of Sullivan, according to the Madison County Health Department.
The mosquitoes that tested positive were collected from a trap off Smith Ridge Road.
The type of mosquito is primarily a bird-biting mosquito, the department said. The virus has not been detected in mosquitoes tested and known to bite humans and there are no plans to do aerial spraying.
In rare cases, people can be infected with EEE, which causes inflammation of the brain and can be fatal.
The Health Department advised residents to use insect repellent and avoid outdoor activity at dawn and dusk which is prime mosquito feeding times.
