Town of Onondaga, NY -- Two sisters from Tully were taken to Upstate University Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries following a two-car accident this morning on Interstate 81 north between the Nedrow on and off ramps, state police said.
The accident occurred about 9:55 a.m. when an uninvolved vehicle slowed down on the highway, Trooper Robert Krenrich said.
A 2009 Hyundai Sonata being driven by Margaret Munson, 59, of Painted Post, slowed down in turn. Munson's car then was struck from behind by a 2009 Chevrolet Impala being driven by Mary Dickinson, 80, of Tully, Krenrich said.
Dickinson and her sister and passenger, Gertrude Dickinson, also of Tully, suffered chest pain and were taken to the hospital for evaluation, Krenrich said. The Impala's air bags deployed and Krenrich said it was possible the bags bruised the Dickinsons.
Munson was not injured, Krenrich said.
Northbound traffic toward Syracuse slowed up while rescuers worked at the scene. Troopers diverted cars off I-81 at the Nedrow off ramp and routed them to the on ramp and back onto the highway to avoid the accident scene. The highway reopened about 10:50 a.m.
No tickets had been issued but the accident remains under investigation, Krenrich said.
