Obama administration’s challenge against the controversial Arizona immigration law goes before a federal judge Thursday.

The administration is seeking to stop the law from going into effect is the main focus of the hearing.
The first challenge will be heard Thursday morning by a group of more than 100 individuals and civil rights groups. Later on in the day, the Justice Department’s lawsuit will have a hearing in a Phoenix federal courtroom.

The law, which was signed by Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer this past April, allows police to question people about their immigration status if they have been stopped for another reason, or if there’s reason to believe that they are not legal citizens. The law also targets those who employ illegal immigrants or provide transportation to them.

Critics of the new law say that it will promote racial profiling. Supporters say the bill will only enforce federal law.

The law is scheduled to go into effect July 29.
