LaFayette, NY – A strong storm that blew through southern Onondaga County felled trees and limbs and knocked out electricity to more than 930 homes and businesses, officials report.
Onondaga County Sheriff’s deputies, fire volunteers and state police are checking out damage reports on Route 11, Route 20, Route 80, Apulia Road, Palmer Road and Webb Road, said Sgt. John D’Eredita, speaking for the sheriff’s office. There were no reports of traffic tie-up as of 2:20 p.m, he said.
National Grid said 428 customers west of Route 11 from the Onondaga Nation to Otisco lost their electricity at 1:41 p.m. and another 333 customers in LaFayette, Pompey and Fabius east of Apulia Road lost their power minutes later, the utility’s reported.
Homes and businesses west of Interstate 81 were expected to get their power back by 4 p.m. Those on the east side of the superhighway could get theirs back between 3:45 p.m. and 4:30 p.m., depending on their location, the utility estimated.
In addition, 178 National Grid customers lost their power about 2:14 p.m. between Highland Forest and DeRuyter Lake. Utility officials estimate they will be restored about 5 p.m.
The National Weather Service had warned at 1:10 p.m. that a severe thunderstorm could hit by 2 p.m. Virtually all of Upstate New York remains under a severe thunderstorm watch through 8 p.m.
