Syracuse, NY -- A Syracuse man who sold tobacco products to residents of his East Fayette Street apartment complex was attacked late Monday by two armed men who forced their way into his apartment.
Jorge Melendez, 24, answered a knock at his door about 11:40 p.m. Monday and the two men shoved against the door, knocking Melendez down. Melendez was struck twice with a handgun by the men, who asked for money, cigarettes and "Dutchies," Melendez told police.
Melendez said the men took $100 in cash, a box of Dutch Masters cigars and a carton of Newport cigarettes, police reported. Melendez said he sold tobacco out of his apartment to other residents.
A woman in the apartment with Melendez was also hit by one of the men but managed to leave the apartment and call police, police said.
Melendez later admitted to police that the two men also made off with about $50 in marijuana, police said.
Melendez had a cut where he was struck in the head and experienced some swelling, police said.
