Two Fort Drum soldiers were killed Tuesday when a suicide bomber attacked their convoy in Kabul, the Army said today.

The two soldiers were part of a team from the 10th Mountain Division headquarters to conduct key leader training and set the conditions for the unit's deployment to Afghanistan later this year.

"This is a heartbreaking loss for the 10th Mountain Division and the entire Fort Drum community. Our thoughts and prayers are with their families," said Brig. Gen. Jeffrey L. Bannister, 10th Mountain Division deputy commanding general for operations.

The New York Times reported that a suicide bomber ran his explosives-laden Toyota minibus into an American convoy during rush-hour traffic. The attack killed 18 people, including 5 American soldiers and an officer from Canada, and wounded at least 47 civilians.

Names are being withheld.

Major General James L. Terry, 10th Mountain Division commander, is in Afghanistan, but was not in the convoy, said Major Fredrick Harrell, a 10th Mountain Division spokesman.

“Gen. Terry is fine”, said Harrell.
