According to a state corrections department report obtained by The Post-Standard, a nurse at the Justice Center jail in Syracuse acted with “gross negligence and incompetence” in connection with the death of inmate Chuniece Patterson last year.

The corrections department report says the nurse "completely misinterpreted and minimized the significance of pain and vomiting" in Patterson, who died Nov. 12 after suffering an ectopic pregnancy.

Details in the report elicited strong reactions from a number of syracuse.com readers, including bsanders118, who had this to say:

"No matter what the circumstances were surrounding this woman's life, when a human being is in pain, on the street, in a jail cell, in their home - common, human compassion sense must come to mind and we need to get help immediately - how can anyone ignore someone that is crying out in pain and needing help? Especially someone who is locked up and has no other choice but to ask for their help. Shame on them..."
