Cortlandville, NY -- A Cortland County sheriff's deputy was beaten with metal coat hanger hooks Wednesday after responding to a Cortlandville apartment, deputies said.
The deputy went to 1 Holiday Drive, Building C, Apt. 132, to check on a resident who had not shown up for work or contacted family, deputies said.
The resident cracked open the door and talked briefly with the deputy. Then the resident opened the door completely and attacked the officer in the hallway, deputies said.
The deputy was struck in the face, head, arms and upper body with two over-the-door coat hanger hooks, deputies said. The deputy was able to call for backup and additional officers arrived.
After a struggle, officers took the resident into custody. The injured deputy and resident were each being treated at local hospitals for their injuries.
The investigation is continuing. Cortland city police, state police and State University College at Cortland police also responded.
