Mini school bus rolls over after collision on Syracuse's East side.
Syracuse, NY -- A First Student mini school bus was knocked on its side, injuring its driver and monitor, after it collided with a Hyundai sedan this morning on Syracuse's east side.
No students were aboard the bus, which was serving the Syracuse City School District, police said.
The bus was traveling north on Ball Avenue about 8:15 a.m. when it went through a two-way stop sign and was struck by a Hyundai sedan traveling west on Milnor Avenue. Its crumbled front end wound up facing northwest while the bus lay on its driver's side facing south, its roof against the trunk of a tree.
The bus driver and monitor were taken to Upstate University Hospital while the driver of the Hyundai was sent to Crouse Hospital, Capt. John Brennan said. All three occupants complained of pain but none appeared to suffer major injury, he said.
Their identities were not available.
Brennan said investigators are trying to piece together from witnesses whether the bus stopped at the sign, went forward and was struck or whether it entered the intersection without stopping.
Schools Transportation Director Patricia A. Bailey said she believed the bus was going to be picking up pupils bound for Franklin School. Another bus was called in to complete the route, she said.
The school district will do its own investigation and if the bus driver is found to have been at fault, he or she will not be allowed to drive for the district any more, Bailey said. If the driver was not at fault, the driver will be given retraining on how to avoid such accidents, she said.
Lisa Goodlin said the impact of the bus hitting the tree on her curbside shook her 201 Milnor Ave, home. The intersection has been the scene of several accidents over the 15 years she has lived there, but her efforts to make the crossroads a four-way stop and to reduce the speed limit from 30 mph have been unsuccessful, she said.
We'll have more on this accident as information becomes available.
