Both customers and vendors wanted to make the temporary move permanent.
Syracuse, NY—The people have spoken, and the Downtown Committee and the city listened.
Mayor Stephanie Miner announced this afternoon that the Downtown Farmers Market will stay in Clinton Square, permanently.
For years farmers gathered on Tuesdays from June to October to offer goods in the city parking lot at the corner of South Salina and West Washington Streets. This year, the market was temporarily moved to Clinton Square to allow the city to finish drainage and landscaping work on the parking lot.
But the comments from customers and vendors were so positive that the Downtown Committee decided to keep the market in Clinton Square, committee Executive Director David Mankiewicz announced.
“The open space in Clinton Square gives the vendors more room to operate, and the fountain provides an attractive backdrop to the weekly event,” he said.
Tuesday, the committee staff interviewed vendors and surveyed customers about the new location. Just about everyone who walked through the farmers market commented that they liked the Clinton Square location with its fountains, shade and outdoor tables better than the parking lot, said Chuck McFadden, the market’s director.
The Downtown Farmers Market takes place from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Oct. 12.
