Oswego, NY -- The Sunoco ethanol plant in Volney will be making ethanol by July 1 that can be sold to the public, a company official said Friday.
Plant manager Gary Center told 142 people at the annual meeting of Operation Oswego County that “we’re very close” to getting the plant up and running. The plant received its first train load of corn two weeks ago and another recently to get the production of ethanol going.
“The Fulton plant will make 100 million gallons a year, which is 25 percent of the ethanol Sunoco uses,” Center said.
The report on the ethanol plant was one of the highlights of the Operation Oswego County meeting showcasing projects the economic development agency worked on in 2009 and is working on in 2010.
Agency Executive Director L. Michael Treadwell said 77 facilities were retained, expanded or built new in 2009 with a capital investment of nearly $100 million. New or retained jobs totaled 659 in 2009 with an estimated new annual payroll of $13,737,626.
The average pay per new job created in 2009 was $29,735.
Some of the projects worked on in 2009 include Steven’s Auto Shop in Fulton, Sabona’s Café in Richland, Bardy’s 4 Seasons Tire in Sandy Creek, Otis Technologies in the Oswego County Industrial Park in Schroeppel, Oneida Lake Ready-Mix in West Monroe, Healthway Home Produced in Pulaski and BioSpherix in Lacona.
Projects planned for 2010 include expansions at Fulton Thermal in Richland, Huhtamaki in Fulton, Novelis in Scriba and the Best Western Conference Center in Oswego. Operation Oswego County also is working with Oswego Health on the expansion of the Fulton Medical Center in the former A.L. Lee Hospital and on the auction of assets of the New York Chocolate and confection Co. site in Fulton.
“For a year in which the economy tanked, it wasn’t too bad of a year for economic development in Oswego County,” Treadwell said.
