LaFayette, NY -- A box truck towing a drilling rig on a trailer lost control and crashed this afternoon on Lords Hill Road, sending the rig rolling onto a home's front lawn and driveway, but injuring no one.
The truck was headed north on Route 80, as Lords Hill Road is also known, when it lost its brakes about 2:30 p.m. near Beak & Skiff Orchard, Trooper David Carlo said at the scene. The truck went through the stop signs where Route 80 crosses Route 20 without stopping, Carlo said, and continued north down the hill.
"When he came across, he probably didn't realize he was on a downhill run," Carlo said.
"Once he gets around that curve," Carlo said, motioning uphill from the wreck, "he's in big trouble."
Heather Hemmes was on the phone inside her Lords Hill Road when she heard brakes squealing.
"I looked up and saw a semi going down the hill sideways," Hemmes said.
A couple hundred feet of rubber on the road marked the path of the truck. At least one large pine tree was knocked down, as well as mailboxes and fence posts. Pipe from the drilling rig lay on the grouund.
The troopers did not immediately release the driver's name and the investigation into the crash is continuing, troopers said. Tickets are pending, troopers said.
