Syracuse, NY - A 7-year-old Syracuse boy darted across a city street this afternoon and ran into the path of a Chevy Impala, police said.

The boy was on the north side of West Ostrander Avenue shortly before 1 p.m. when he ran south off a curb and into the front of the car, Syracuse police Sgt. Gary Bulinski said.

The boy was not hurt, although Rural/Metro Ambulance took him to Upstate University Hospital to be evaluated, Bulinski said. Police are not releasing the boy's name, but say he lives on South Avenue and was visiting his grandmother, who lives on West Matson Avenue.

The driver of the car, Takiya Williams, 34, of 4 Plantation Blvd., Liverpool, was visiting family on West Matson Avenue. WIlliams said she borrowed a relative's car to go to the store, and didn't see the boy run out into the street and in front of the car she was driving before it was too late to avoid a collision.

"I didn't see him," Williams said with tears in her eyes, standing next to a patrol car on West Ostrander Avenue. "He was running into the street. He was so small. I feel really, really bad."

Williams said she was not speeding and stopped the car to help after the collision. She also called 911.

The boy told police and his grandmother that he was not hurt and he did not want to go to the hospital, but he was taken anyway for precaution, Bulinski said.

Police charged Williams with third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, a misdemeanor, because her license was suspended, Bulinski said. Officers also issued Williams a ticket charging her with driving an uninspected vehicle. Police said the vehicle is registered to one of Williams' family members.
