Clay, NY -- A Clay resident was injured this afternoon after the car he was driving was struck from behind by an SUV on Route 57 in Clay, deputies said.

Anthony Leone, 88, of 4171 Forest Brook Drive, Clay, was taken to Upstate University Hospital after the crash with injuries that were not life-threatening, Sgt. John D’Eredita said.

Leone was traveling north in his car about 2:50 p.m. when he slowed to turn onto Lucan Road, D’Eredita said. An SUV driven by Barbara Piro, 77, of 7891 Sagamore Drive North crashed into the back of Leone’s car, which sent Leone’s car into a car stopped at the stop sign on Lucan Road. She was ticketed for following too close, D'Eredita said.

Rachel Briedis, of Clay, was the first to Leone’s car and found him on his side between the two front seats with his head resting behind the seats, she said. “He was complaining of severe back pain,” she said.

Firefighters had to cut the roof from the car in order to get Leone out of the vehicle.

Traffic was slowed on Route 57 for more than an hour while the crash scene was being cleaned up.
