Lenox, NY -- Madison County officials said four people were injured, three seriously, in a head-on crash midday Thursday in Lenox.
Sheriff Alan Riley said Gregory Witte, 31, of Utica, was driving west on state Route 5 when he crossed the double solid line. He told investigators he had fallen asleep, awoke to find his vehicle in the wrong lane and returned to the westbound land where he crashed head-on with a Volkswagen driven by Sarah Dubbs, 33, of Camden.
Police said it appeared Dubbs, who was eastbound, entered the westbound lane in an effort to evade Witte’s Chevrolet van.
Witte suffered an injury to his leg and was treated and released at the Oneida HealthCare facility. His wife, Kimberly Witte, 25, had to be extricated from the van. She suffered multiple trauma, police said.
The Wittes' 8-year-old son, Christopher, restrained in the back seat of the van, was evaluated at the Oneida HealthCare Facility and found to be uninjured.
Dubbs is in serious condition at Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse. She sustained head injuries and multiple fractures, police said.

The crash occurred shortly after 12:30 p.m. between a minivan and a Volkswagen Jetta in front of Believers' Chapel, 2657 Seneca Turnpike.

The Volkswagen tried to avoid the van in his lane but the two vehicles crashed head-on.
Three people were in the van and two were in the Jetta, deputies said. The driver of the van was taken to Oneida City Hospital. A woman in the van and the two people in the Jetta were taken to Syracuse hospitals with serious injuries, deputies said.
A 6-year-old boy in the van was not hurt, deputies said. The driver of the van walked away from the crash and his injuries are not considered serious.
