EASTPORT, Maine — A Maine scuba diver came face-to-teeth with a shark — and he has the encounter on video.
Scott MacNichol says he’s seen sharks underwater before, but he’s never had one attack his camera, apparently mistaking it for food. MacNichol, of Perry, wasn’t hurt in his Saturday encounter with the porbeagle shark off Eastport. He estimates the shark was eight feet long and weighed about 300 pounds.
MacNichol says the shark swam around him twice in about 28 feet of water and then began jabbing at his camera. Video shows the shark’s teeth filling the screen before the animal swims off.
The Bangor Daily News says MacNichol was recording video of the ocean floor as part of an environmental assessment.
