Bethesda, Md. — Police in Maryland now say that the 18-year-old arrested driving a Jeep that had belonged to Sue Marcum is “a potential suspect” in Marcum’s murder.
Marcum, 52, who graduated from Nottingham High School in Syracuse in 1976, was found dead in her Bethesda, Md., home Monday morning. Personal property was stolen, police said, and Marcum’s Jeep Cherokee missing.
Police in nearby Washington spotted her car shortly after midnight Tuesday morning and, after a brief chase, arrested the driver, Deandrew Hamlin, 18, of Washington.
Montgomery County Police detectives executed a search warrant of Hamlin’s home Tuesday evening and on Wednesday identified him as a potential suspect.
Police said preliminary investigation found signs of trauma to Marcum’s body, forced entry into the home, and “evidence of a struggle.” Police said the “preliminary report from the Medical Examiner’s Office in Baltimore ruled the cause of death as asphyxia and blunt force trauma, and manner of death as homicide."
At memorial service for Marcum will take place Nov. 9 at American University, where Marcum has taught since 1999.
