Syracuse, NY -- Two young boys and their mother were checked for smoke inhalation at Upstate University Hospital after a fire Sunday at their Syracuse apartment, fire officials said.

The 4:30 p.m. blaze heavily damaged 310 Putnam St., leaving two families with a total of seven residents homeless, according to the American Red Cross, which was providing assistance.

The fire was started by the two young children, ages 3 and 6, playing with a lighter in a first-floor bedroom, said fire investigator Lt. Joe Galloway.

Flames extended up the outside of the house and damaged the exterior and roof of a house next door, Galloway said.

The children's mother pulled them out of the burning house before going back in to attempt to put out the blaze, Galloway said. All four residents of the upstairs apartment, including two children, escaped without injury.

The first-floor residents were taken by ambulance to the hospital for evaluation.

The house will need significant rehabbing before it can be lived in again, Galloway said.
