Syracuse, NY -- The New York State Department of Transportation and the Federal Railroad Administration will meet with the public Wednesday to discuss plans to improve passenger rail service in the region.

The meetings are part of an environmental review for the High Speed Rail Empire Corridor Project. They are a way for the public to provide input to the project team.

The local meeting will be from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Empire Expo Center at the State Fairgrounds, 581 State Fair Blvd. It is one of six meetings being held in cities across the state in October and November.

The project is looking at how to introduce passenger train speeds of at least 110 miles per hour between Schenectady and Niagara Falls, and adding to areas between Schenectady and New York where trains can travel at least that fast.

The project also seeks to improve passenger rail service reliability, travel times and frequency.

The 463-mile Empire Corridor runs north from New York through Albany, and then turns west passing through Schenectady, Utica, Syracuse, Rochester and Buffalo. It ends in Niagara Falls.

Most of the corridor is owned by CSX Transportation and is one of the busiest freight lines in the nation.
