Syracuse, NY -- The National Science Foundation has awarded Syracuse University School of Information Studies Professor Kevin Crowston $478,858 over three years to investigate how computer software used by social networks can help partnerships between volunteers and scientists.
His research will focus on developing a practical understanding of how social computing can benefit science education, developing new research models of social computing that support large-scale public participation, and testing social computing systems that incorporate explicit knowledge of human cognitive and social abilities.
The project will investigate how public involvement in scientific research can advance scientific goals, while educating volunteers. It will also investigate how citizen science can benefit large-scale data collection and analysis.
