Lysander, NY – A firefighter fell through the floor of burning house in Lysander Thursday night, but officials said he escaped serious injury.

The Lakeside Fire Department firefighter fell from the second to the first floor, said Belgium-Coldsprings Fire Chief Chris Evans.

The fire was called in by a passerby shortly before 7 p.m. Evans said that when his department’s firefighters arrived they found smoke at the front of the building and heavy smoke and flames at the upstairs back of the two-story home at 3101 Patchett Road.

When firefighters got inside, they found flames at least one room on the first floor as well, Evans said.

Working from the inside, firefighters broke through the roof to ventilate the smoky blaze. From the street, blackened walls could be seen through the gaping openings where windows had previously stood.

Evans said the firefighter who fell through the floor was working on the second story when the floor gave way. The firefighter was OK and had refused medical help after other firefighters quickly got him out of the building, Evans said. The firefighter’s name was not available at the scene.

Along with Lakeside, Evans’s department was joined by personnel from Baldwinsville, Liverpool, Seneca River, Phoenix and Moyers Corners fire departments.
