Auburn, NY -- This weekend, nearly 100 journalism students from Syracuse University will descend on the city of Auburn to chronicle the lives of its residents as part of an annual fall workshop.

The three-day event will bring together 30 top multimedia and photography professionals to coach the students. They include Michel duCille, a two-time Pulitzer winner with The Washington Post and Bert Fox, director of photography for The Charlotte Observer and former National Geographic picture editor.

Students begin their work Friday and return again Saturday.

The workshop will culminate at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Cayuga-Onondaga County BOCES offices, 1879 W. Genesee St., with an exhibition of the student-produced work. The public is invited.

Bruce Strong, Newhouse photography professor and workshop director, said he is most excited to see the growth that will occur in the students over the course of the weekend. “Some students have the best shoots of their lives and are excited by the visible improvements in their work, and others struggle,” Strong said. “... In both cases, the students grow.”

He thanked Auburn for its hospitality in allowing the workshop participants to enter their community. “They’ve been so warm and open, and we appreciate that,” Strong said.
