Syracuse, NY -- Saturday morning, members of the National Guard will be running on the shores of Onondaga Lake and in far-off Afghanistan.
The 174th Fighter Wing, based at Hancock Air Field, is holding a Hometown Heroes Run at Onondaga Lake with a fun run for children starting and 8:45 a.m. and a five kilometer run set to begin at 9:15 a.m., said Major Jeff Brown.
While runners trace a loop from Willow Bay and back, some of the 50 members of the 174th stationed at Bagram Airfield outside Kabul, Afghanistan will be running a course there.
“This race is an opportunity for families of deployed airmen to feel connected with them through a shared purpose,” Brown said, “even though they are separated by thousands of miles.”
The run at Onondaga Lake is open to the public. Registration is $20, and all proceeds go to the New York National Guard Family Readiness Council which helps support the families of deployed members of the Guard.
