The Stardust Foundation of Central New York on Thursday will announce it is making a large donation to Auburn Memorial Hospital to help the facility rebuild its maternity ward, officials said today.
The amount of the contribution was not made public.
Hospital and Stardust officials are expected to attend the 3:30 p.m. announcement/reception at the hospital’s maternity ward, which was almost forced to close four years ago.
Stardust is a philanthropic foundation that has committed to investing $15 million into the Auburn-area community over the next few years.
Earlier this year the hospital revealed that it would modernize the maternity ward at a cost of about $2.4 million. The renovation plan includes adding several birthing and post-partum rooms, a reception area for families and two nurseries.
In 2006 a state commission recommended shuttering the maternity ward but the hospital persuaded the state to keep its birthing facility open. Most of the maternity ward has stayed the same since 1958.
