Syracuse, NY -- Syracuse firefighters are standing by this afternoon as they wait for a demolition crew to begin clawing through the wreckage of the old Marsellus Casket Co. building which was the scene of a spectacular fire this morning.

Smoke is still rising from the building where spots of fire remain deep inside, said District Fire Chief Kent Young. The hot spots are so deep that crews won’t be able to reach them until the demolition crew arrives with equipment that can claw through the building to allow firefighters to pour water on the smoldering wreckage, he said.

Meanwhile, investigators are looking for what sparked the fire in the vacant building where the power had been turned off. Fire Chief Mark McLees has called the fire suspicious.

The plan is to demolish the building where firefighters were called at 3:06 this morning, Young said.

Although the landmark clock, which now bears graffiti saying “time for change”, still stands, the roof has caved in and firefighters suspect other areas inside the four-story brick building have also collapsed, Young said.

Some bricks have also fallen off the building, he said.
