Fort Drum, NY -- A Fort Drum solider was killed in a non-combat related incident in Afghanistan, the Defense Department announced Monday.
Clinton E. Springer II, 21, of Sanford, Maine, died Friday in Kabul, according to the Pentagon.
Springer was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team of the 10th Mountain Division.
Gov. David Paterson ordered flags at state buildings flown at half staff on Wednesday.
"On behalf of all New Yorkers I wish to extend our sympathy to the friends, family, and fellow soldiers of Private First Class Springer," Paterson said. "Though not a native New Yorker, we consider all those who serve at Fort Drum to be part of our New York family. While we mourn his death we will honor his service and his sacrifice to our country."
