John Nunez, 29, was charged with second-degree assault and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, both felonies.

Syracuse, NY - A Syracuse man is accused of stabbing a 19-year-old twice in the torso Saturday night, police said.

John Nunez, 29, was charged with second-degree assault and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, both felonies.

City police say Nunez stabbed 19-year-old John Hardy-Thompson, of Syracuse, about 9:15 p.m. at the corner of Van Rensselaer Street and Richmond Avenue.

Hardy-Thompson got into an "altercation" with another man, and during that altercation he was stabbed, police Sgt. Gary Bulinski said in a news release.

Syracuse Police Officers Sean Thomas and Brent Potts, who work with the police department's Crime Reduction Team, caught Nunez as he was trying to run from the scene, Bulinski said.

Hardy-Thompson was taken to Upstate University Hospital, where he was in stable condition this morning, police said.

Nunez was sent to the Onondaga County Justice Center. He is scheduled to be arraigned today in Syracuse City Court.
