Syracuse, NY -- Slow going for crews working on the elevated portion of Interstate 81 in Syracuse means a temporary reprieve for southbound motorists.

The New York State Department of Transportation has temporarily reopened the Interstate 690 eastbound ramp to Interstate 81 south in Syracuse. The ramp in the city’s downtown will remain open for about two weeks.

The DOT had closed the ramp earlier to accommodate work on the elevated portion of I-81 through the city. Work at the southern end of the bridge is going slower than planned, and DOT decided to reopen the I-690 ramp until crews move further north, said Hank Polech, speaking for DOT.

The starting point of the right lane closure on I-81 south, which went from the off-ramp to I-690 east to the Castle Street bridge, has been changed to just past Exit 18, the Adams-Harrison Street off ramp.

The lane closure ends at Castle Street.

This schedule change is for work in progress on the southbound lanes of I-81 only. All lane and ramp closures in place for the same repair project on the I-81 northbound side will remain in place at this time.
