Rochester, NY — An invitation to dine in a “ditch” has proven to be popular with the hundreds of delegates attending a global canals conference in Upstate New York.
Nearly 400 attendees of the 2010 World Canals Conference in Rochester turned out Monday night for an event dubbed “Dinner in the Ditch.” The gathering was held in a portion of the abandoned Erie Canal aqueduct in the city’s downtown.
The 170-year-old aqueduct carried the canal over the Genesee River.
New York canal supporters and local leaders used the event to showcase their proposal to rewater the aqueduct as part of a redevelopment project that would create a historic canal district in downtown Rochester.
Representatives from 17 countries and canal towns across New York are attending the conference, which runs through Thursday.
