Syracuse, NY – Police today identified the officer who shot at a man who allegedly attacked them Saturday with a stolen pickup truck as Officer James Cinque.

Cinque was one of at least two officers who approached the driver of the white pickup about 5:43 p.m. Saturday from a sidewalk at the 200 block of Pond Street. The driver, later identified as Scott Carpenter, 45, of Hastings, allegedly drove forward, striking a parked minivan, backed up, then sped onto the sidewalk toward the officers.

One officer had to push off the truck to avoid injury, then fired into the vehicle, according to earlier reports. Cinque, a two-year member of the force, was that officer, Sgt. Gary Bulinski said.

“A person used deadly force against them and they returned deadly force. Fortunately, no one was hurt in the incident,” Bulinski said.

Carpenter took off, leading officers on a chase through the North Side that police called off because the time of day made it unsafe.

Police and Oswego County Sheriff’s deputies found the truck and Carpenter later Saturday in Oswego County.

He was charged with first-degree reckless endangerment, unlawfully fleeing police in a motor vehicle, grand larceny, criminal possession of stolen property and several traffic violations.
