Syracuse, NY - U.S. Sen. Charles E. Schumer will be in Syracuse today to urge federal officials to help prevent a stockpiling of coffee beans that could push rising prices even higher.
Schumer will address the brewing issue at 10:45 a.m. today outside of Freedom Of Espresso, 115 Solar St.
He will urge the Obama administratrion to press the world's leading coffee exporters - Brazil and Vietnam - to abandon any plans to stockpile beans and drive prices higher.
Coffee bean prices hit a 13-year high last month. Schumer said consumers already are paying 10 percent more for some major brands and could be paying 10 to 15 percent more for some others soon.
Schumer contends the price hikes are slamming small businesses like Freedom of Espresso which has seen its supply costs rise 27 percent in the past year.
Joining Schumer at today's press conference will be John Reynolds and Anna Dobbs, owners of Freedom of Espresso.
