'Vetoing this one seems like a no-brainer'

2009-07-23-jc-HRBRFEST3.JPGThe U.S. Brig "Niagara, " out of Erie, Pa., a 1988 reconstruction of a 198-foot War of 1812-era warship, fires one of its cannons as it cruises into Oswego Harbor Thursday afternoon to join this year's Harborfest celebration.

Gov. David Paterson again has vetoed the creation of a commission to promote the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812. Oswego County officials, who have been planning events to commemorate the role of Oswego County and Fort Ontario during the war for two years, are disappointed. Here's what orangegrad97 has to say:

I'm not a fan of Paterson, or anything he has done since gaining office. However, this seems like foolish use of state funds (since we basically don't have any in the first place), so I would have vetoed this too. Set your emotions and the politics aside for a moment, and consider that long term financial stability often comes with the price of some very tough...often heart wrenching...decisions. Vetoing this one seems like a no-brainer when you put it in that context. Let's celebrate something more worthwhile like CNY school students making academic test score improvements in the last year. Now there is something to get excited about and maybe spend a few bucks on...let's have some some refreshments and festivities on the next meet-the-teacher conference night.
