Syracuse, NY -- Two Syracuse police officers were injured -- one breaking his leg -- while chasing a gambling suspect Wednesday evening, city police said.

Anthony Bowens, 20, of 976 Bellevue Ave., was accused of gambling with dice around 6:05 p.m. on Clover Street, said Sgt. Gary Bulinski. He was one of 15 people charged by police with loitering with the purpose of gambling.

But when officers searched Bowens, he began to struggle, Bulinski said. Officer Charles Fassinger injuried his shoulder after bumping into another officer.

Bowens ran from the scene and police chased him a few blocks to Chester Street, Bulinski said. Another struggle ensued and Officer Joel Dorchester twisted his ankle, breaking it.

Bowens was eventually subdued and charged with two counts of felony assault on a police officer, as well as misdemeanor obstructing governmental administration and possession of marijuana, a violation, Bulinski said.
