Syracuse, NY – Temperatures are expected to peak around 90 once again today as a high pressure system continues to keep the sky sunny and pump hot air into the region, the National Weather Service in Binghamton says.
If they do reach that high, it will be the third day in a row and the 12th day since May that the thermometer at Hancock Airport hit 90 or higher, according to the weather service. The record high for Sept. 2 is 96 set in 1953; the normal high for the date is 76.
The weather service had not issued an air quality advisory as of 7a.m. The agency had issued one Wednesday warning people with breathing problems of expected high ozone levels.
The lofty high temperatures are contributing to one hot year. Theodore Champney, a meteorologist with the Binghamton office, said he ran through the data for Syracuse’s “meteorological summer” – June, July and August – and determined it was the 11th hottest in the past century. The heat continued a trend toward warmer than normal temperatures that emerged in February or March, he said.
The high pressure is expected to linger into Friday, when highs in the upper 80s are expected. But a cold front approaching from the west could push showers into the Finger Lakes by Friday afternoon.
The front is bringing cold Canadian air behind it. Highs in the upper 60s are expected both Saturday and Sunday, with showers possible both days and breezy, cloudy conditions on Saturday.
The showers and breezes aren’t likely to come from Hurricane Earl, which is expected to track up the East Coast. Champney said systems causing our weather will keep Earl’s affects from pushing too deeply inland, keeping its rain and winds south and east of Central New York, he said.
