Fenner, NY -- One person is known dead following a one-car accident this morning on Oxbow Road in this Madison County town, Undersheriff Doug Bailey said.
A search of the wooded area on the west side of Oxbow Road south of Mile Strip Road where the car came to rest revealed no other victims, Bailey said. A final determination will depend on what investigators find when the car, which came to rest upside-down, is righted, he said.
The identity of the victim, including gender, still was uncertain at 11:10 a.m, about 45 minutes after residents of the rural road first called Madison County 911 about hearing a loud crash, Bailey said.
Subsequent callers reported that a car had gone off the road and was fully in flames, Bailey said.
Emergency crews found the small- to mid-size vehicle in woods down an embankment on the west side of the road, the northbound vehicle's left side, Bailey said. It appeared to have hit several trees.
The one occupant inside the car was burnt beyond recognition, he said.
Officials closed Oxbow Road from Mile Strip to Alene Corners roads as they tried to reconstruct the accident. They concentrated on markings on the right shoulder before the road bends to the left, but were unsure early on whether they were related, Bailey said.
However, it was apparent the driver failed to negotiate the left curve, Bailey said.
The section of Oxbow Road will be closed indefinitely while the investigation continues and the vehicle is removed, Bailey said.
