Syracuse, NY -- The mercury is expected to inch up to 92 today, two degrees shy of the record of 94 posted in 1953 and 1932, according to the National Weather Service in Binghamton.
The normal high for the day is 76.
In addition, the National Weather Service has issued an air quality advisory for the area between 11 a.m. and 11 p.m. People with breathing problems and the very young should limit outdoor activity because of anticipated high ozone levels.
The area has had 11 days of temperatures in the 90s from May though Tuesday, said Meteorologist Theodore Champney.
“We don’t normally get this kind of heat this late in the summer,” he said.
A ridge of high pressure along the East Coast is trapping a weak southwest flow of warm air that is going into New England and southeast Canada, Champney said.
The jet stream, which is dipping down in northern plains now, will move east kicking a large high pressure system out and bringing cooler temperatures over the weekend, he said.
The Syracuse area will not likely see any rain or wind from Hurricane Earl as it makes its way up the East Coast.
Temperatures will cool off with highs in the 70s and lows in the 50s as schools reopen next week.
