Gov. David Paterson again vetoed the creation of a commission to promote the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812, a move that officials in Oswego County called a blow to plans to commemorate Fort Ontario's role in the war.
“In the absence of any funding, it will be difficult to try to put on a commemoration,” said David Turner, director of Oswego County’s office of planning, community development and tourism.
But syracuse.com user syrguy321 offered a different point of view, and applauded Paterson's action. Here's what syrguy321 said:
"While everyone hates Paterson ... he will go down in history as perhaps the first governor who tried to fix NY's fiscal mess. These historical sites, park and recreational facilities need to stop receiving state aid/financing. If they cant operate on their own through admission fees, volunteers, and/or community sponsorship ... then obviously the people aren't interested in visiting the site, and it is in reality no longer significant despite what a few history bluffs/preservationists may believe. If communities want to preserve these sites, then it should be the community's responsibility."
