Oswego, NY -- Young sailing students with the Oswego Maritime Foundation got to put what they've learned to good use Thursday morning when the Coast Guard was called to help them fight high winds in Oswego Harbor.

Maritime Foundation President Richard Bush said nine students age nine to 13 were out in 14-foot sailboats in the harbor with two instructors. He said class began at 9 a.m. and they were doing drills.

At about 10, the wind started to increase. The instructors gathered all the boats together, but while doing so, one boy fell off his boat, Bush said.

While trying to get the student back on the boat, "one of the boats got away from the pack," he said. The instructors then called the Coast Guard for help.

One sailboat capsized near the shore by Fort Ontario. The students walked out of the water and were met by workers from the Port Authority of Oswego.

No one was injured.

"Everybody followed the safety procedures they are taught," Bush said.
