Syracuse, N.Y. -- Swimming has been banned again at Oneida Shores Park in Cicero after high levels of coliform bacteria were found in the water.

The Onondaga County Health Department said swimming will not be allowed until bacteria levels are acceptable. The rest of the park will remain open.

Some types of coliform will cause gastrointestinal illness. The Health Department said the presence of coliform bacteria is an indicator of increased general bacterial action in the water. The bacteria thrives in warmer than usual water temperatures. The Health Department advised anyone concerned about gastrointestinal symptoms to contact their health care provider.

The county closed the beach to swimming earlier this month for a day because of high bacteria levels.

Cicero officials also closed Joseph F. William Memorial Park Beach on Lakeshore Road for the season earlier than usual two weeks ago because of high levels of the bacteria.
