Albany group releases government salaries for 2009-10

Want to know how much that cop down the street takes home, or how much that guy who plows your streets is paid?

The Empire Center for New York State released its updated salary information for 186,223 people who worked for county, city, town and village governments in 2009-10.

Some statewide findings from the Empire Center:

• County and municipal salaries for 2009-10 totaled $9.6 billion.

• The highest-paid municipal employee was Rockland County, Town of Clarkstown Police Chief Peter Noonan, who earned $301,534. Clarkstown paid its 168 police officers a state-leading average of $146,067.

• Six-figure average salaries were normal for local police and firefighters throughout Long Island and the lower Mid-Hudson region.

The database consists of full-time and part-time workers, including employees who left or retired during the fiscal year, and employees hired during the year. Salary totals include overtime and pay for unused sick and vacation time, according to a news release.
